South Point Breeze Break-Ins

Sunday, June 8th, 2008
There were two break-ins recently at 322 and 310 South Lang Avenue in South Point Breeze.  On Saturday, May 17 between 4:30 and 5pm, a black male broke into the basement of 322 South Lang via a window.  He took a bicycle (with two flat tires) from the basement, then moved up to the first appt level and took a 42″ TV.  He took bedsheets, wrapped the flatscreen in the sheets, balanced it on the flat-tire bike, and walked it down South Lang toward Penn Ave.  A concerned neighbor even stopped to help him as it looked like he was having trouble balancing the “painting” he was moving.  He smelled of alcohol.
On May 31 (also a Sat night) between 10:30 and 11pm, a black male with graying, dreadlocked hair pulled into a ponytail, approximately 6′4″ and weighing 170 lbs broke into the detached garage of 310 South Lang Avenue.  He went in through a side window, took out two bikes and started walking them down the driveway.  At about that time, I let the dog out (end of Penguins game) and he started going crazy.  I ran outside and saw the black male standing in the middle of the street yelling at the dog.  At the same time, the resident of 322 South Lang (next door neighbor to 310) ran outside and saw the man standing in the road.  The resident from 322 ran to the middle of the road and cracked the man in the middle of the back, sending him flying over the bikes and sprawling onto the pavement.  The burglar ran down S Lang toward Penn as fast as he could once he got off the ground.
These two incidents are likely the same criminal.  In talking to the police, they have a very good idea of who the man is as he was arrested recently at the Squirrel Hill Café for not paying a bill.  I commend the local officer (himself a resident of South Point Breeze) for taking the time to follow up on this matter and come up with a likely suspect.  There were many eye witnesses to the May 31 incident, so there is good information on the physical description.  He did not seem to be armed, and was unusual in that he was older (believed to be about 50 years old according to the police information).
Please be cautious as you see suspicious persons near your home.

Notes from Recent Public Safety Meeting

Monday, March 10th, 2008

PURPOSE
The South Point Breeze Organization (SPBO) and Councilman Bill Peduto sponsored a Crime Prevention Meeting on Tuesday, March 4th in the St. Bede Cafeteria. Approximately 140 residents attended this standing room only session. Discussion focused on two recent crime incidents which took place on Hastings and Selwyn Streets. While the news media had reported numerous incidents, they were not in the immediate vicinity. The local incidents were isolated and don’t appear to be related, however, residents should always be kept informed.

Police Commander Cathy Degler and Community Policing Officer William Mathew White (as well as some plain clothes detectives) were in attendance to share information.

Helpful Hint: If you’ve witnessed a crime close up, for identification purposes, instead of just paying attention to their clothing, which can easily be shed or turned inside out within minutes of a crime, look at the shoes. Criminals rarely change their shoes.

CITIZEN OBSERVER
The City has funded the “Citizen Observer,” a free web based public safety software program that provides crime information to citizens regarding their specific community and throughout the entire city. Residents must sign up online to get access:

SOUTH POINT BREEZE ORGANIZATION
The South Point Breeze Organization (SPBO) is a non profit volunteer community organization which can represent the community in a variety of ways, including planning, safety, environmental and social matters. The SPBO will host a follow-up Crime Prevention meeting to provide assistance and experience in organizing official block watches–street by street.

The Police Department can provide funding assistance in printing official Block Watch Signs–Criminals Beware. These signs alert criminals that the people that live on that street are organized, sharing information, and keeping a watchful eye.

To get on the SPBO e-mail to receive notices of future meetings, and general information of interest, log onto email info@southpointbreeze.org.

ZONE 4 GENERAL INFORMATION
The City is currently comprised of 6 Police Zones. The Zone which service Point Breeze is ZONE 4 (formerly #6). It is the largest geographic zone in the city, and comprises not only Point Breeze and North Point Breeze, but also Squirrel Hill, Swisshelm Park, Shadyside, North, Central and South Oakland to Uptown, Greenfield, Hazelwood, Hays, Glenwood, New Homestead/Gates Manor and Lincoln Place. It is staffed according to crime statistics. There is an overlap of officers during shift changes.

EMERGENCY AND NON-EMGERNCY CONTACTS
CALL 911 for EMERGENCIES and suspicious activity.

CALL 311 number for non-emergency issues (i.e. garbage wasn’t picked up, neighbors dog is barking all night, street needs salted, potholes, etc.)

Follow-up information relating to a crime can be reported to the Police Zone by calling 412-422-6520.

Open House at The Pittsburgh New Church School

Saturday, March 8th, 2008
We would like to welcome the South Point Breeze community to our open house at The Pittsburgh New Church School on Wednesday March 19th at 6:30pm. We are a lively little school set at the end of Le Roi Road (off Reynolds, between Lang and Homewood) and welcome students from a ten mile radius (or further if they don’t need busing!)
This will be a good opportunity to see the results of our project week, but also to see student work from throughout the year. Come meet other parents and teachers, and see our family-like classrooms. Refreshments will be served. Please call if you would like further information.

Bakery Row Forum and Planning Committee

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Skip Schwab (ELDI) and Rob Pfaffman (Pfaffman and Associates) are getting the community planning process for “Bakery Row” geared up again. Rob writes:

Another key part of our planning team is Jim Hartling of Urban Partners Philadelphia, who is looking at the market and giving us important feedback about where things are heading in the real estate market. Last Fall a blog was set up by Rob Stephany that gives you some sense of the process and feedback.

http://eastlibertypost.com/bakery-row-forum/

Based on meetings with the steering committee, developer interviews and data analysis, Jim and I are beginning to gear up to develop new vision documents that build on last year’s community meeting and market research.

We will be focusing (while not ignoring of course all of the other ideas developed last fall) on a couple of key areas based on the initial recommendations of Urban Partners:

  • Repairing the streetscape connection between downtown East Liberty and Penn Avenue developments (Bakery Row)
  • Focus design efforts on the Giant Eagle Shakespeare Street Development to create a better designed mixed use urban development transformation. (need a new gas station site to incent GE!)
  • Work with Club One to explore the redesign of the street edge of the facility.

Stay tuned for more updates.
