I’ll let Boris explain this one:
My name is Boris Weinstein. Three years ago, I started a volunteer group in Shadyside called Citizens Against Litter. We are now a group of 70 volunteers picking up everyday litter in Shadyside. The neighborhood is cleaner. I also have been helpful in neighborhoods like Squirrel Hill, Regent Square, Central North Side, South Side Flats and Slopes in efforts to get volunteer organizations started. This year, we did something interesting. We ran with an idea by the United Jewish Federation to have a two neighborhood anti-litter cleanup and relations-building weekend. It was successful by the standards that we set and by the feelings and attitudes in the two communities. More than 300 volunteers were involved in community cleanups.
We have scheduled a second weekend effort. This one is in 2007. Specifically the dates are April 27, 28 and 29. On the first day–a Friday–school children will be asked through their principals to have the children clean up around their campuses. On the Saturday, Homewood volunteers will redd up in Homewood. On Sunday, Sq. Hill residents will redd up in Squirrel Hill. Some volunteers will cross over and clean up in both. On Sunday afternoon, we’ll get together for a picnic.
For next year, our committee would like to expand our two neighborhood effort in “Collecting and Connecting” to neighbors in Point Breeze South and Point Breeze North. It seems like an obvious and natural move.
The next planning meeting is Nov. 15 at the Homewood YMCA at 10 a.m. The Mayor’s office, Public Works, and the City Council offices have also been invited.
We received a lot of feedback on this year’s event, which we wanted to write down before we forgot. Thanks to Greg for doing so.
Have a read. If you think we missed anything in our review, leave a comment and we can update the document. Our goal is to make next year even better.

We are having a post-bonfire review to talk about what we did well and where we need to make improvements for next year.
Everyone’s welcome. Bring you comments and ideas.
A great big thank you to everyone for coming out as a community this year’s event. We had fantastic weather, great food and drink, some pretty swanky lighting, and a number of incredibly hard working and dedicated volunteers who made it all possible.
We’ve posted some snaps from the October 7th Bonfire. Take a look.
