Community Meeting for the Restoration of the Mellon Park Walled Garden

If you are not able to attend the lecture, please join us for a community meeting on Saturday, April 25th at 10am. This meeting is free and open to the public. During the community meeting, the artist will present her proposal for the work of art that will be located in the lawn of the Walled Garden. The landscape architect will present their plans for the rest of the garden restoration.

A selection panel facilitated by the Office of Public Art chose artist Janet Zweig to become a member of the design team for the restoration of the Mellon Park Walled Garden. This restoration will be completed in honor of Ann Katherine Seamans, who enjoyed spending time in the garden.
The 35-acre Mellon Park spans Fifth Avenue in Shadyside and is the former Richard Beatty Mellon estate. Dating to 1935, the Walled Garden is a classic work of landscape architecture by Vitale and Geiffert, containing sculpture by Edmond R. Amateis. Anchored at one end with a flagstone terrace and fountain, the garden is enclosed on three sides by brick and stone, and features a central rectangular lawn surrounded by plantings and flagstone walkways. In addition to Ms. Zweig’s artwork, the project encompasses restoration and improvements to the Walled Garden, including the main entry, seating, trees and perennial flower beds. The restoration of the garden is being designed by La Quatra Bonci, a local landscape architecture firm.

Janet is an artist from Brooklyn, NY who has worked on public art projects throughout the country. She is currently on the design team for the restoration of the Walled Garden in Mellon Park. Join us as Janet talks about her recent and upcoming public art projects and her proposal for the Ann Katharine Seamans Memorial Garden. Traffic/Road changes around the Bakery Square project

As part of the Bakery Square project, the developers are asking for changes to Penn and 5th Avenue.

The proposed family of legislation supports the roadway improvements proposed and approved by the City Planning Commission, Department of Public Works, and PennDOT for the Bakery Square development project. These improvements include the widening of Penn Avenue to allow for a center left turn lane into the development site, new traffic signal equipment at adjacent intersections, the construction of a shared use path through Mellon Park along Penn Avenue, and the addition of a right turn lane from Penn Avenue east bound to Fifth Avenue.

We asked Councilman Peduto’s office about provisions for walking and biking, to which he responded

left hand turn signals with timed lights can help pedestrian safety if timed down pedestrian stages are included. Bump outs, painted and lit crosswalks and putting the bike lane in the park could all help as well. I will ask Dan [Gillman] to contact bike pittsburgh today and get a list of suggestions.

Car Vandalism on Fennimore

A resident wrote to share some details on recent vandalism…

I thought I would let you know that earlier this week there was a spate of car vandalism on Fennimore Street, the block between Gettysburg and Hastings. At least one, probably two cars were keyed and a large tree branch was placed on the hood of another car. It probably happened between 9.15 and 10 pm the evening of Tuesday, June 24th. Thought this might be of interest, considering the other strange activities going on nearby recently.

Armed Robbery (22 Feb 2008)

A sobering note from a Point Breeze resident:

Just a word of caution; I was robbed at gunpoint on Friday afternoon at 3pm, on Selwyn Street, by my car. They were after cash and they got some. Theywere on foot. (A fellow was robbed the same way last Tuesday on Hastings, the 200 block.) I had just unloaded the groceries, went out to lock the car and they came up behind me. About 18 to 20, one was black and slim, had a hood, a large silver revolver. The other was brown, had a mustache, a knitted hat, and a brown jacket with some leather, two toned, probably a sports team. Anyhow, I could identify them if they catch them.

We love our neighborhood and a couple bad actors can cause considerable havoc for a short time. Confident they will be caught. But right now, they seem to be roaming the East End in daylight looking for people who are by themselves.

I wasn’t afraid but was rather ticked off. Hope the police patrol the East End a little more aggressively for a while. No need to reply. Just be wary of strangers if you’re walking.

Is it a comedy, a tragedy, a romance? Like Quantum, Shakespeare’s Cymbeline breaks all the rules and doesn’t care. At it’s heart are many journeys. Broken families stumble back together and characters struggle through dense fog to emerge whole. Cymbeline is a tale about who we are, where we come from and how we find our way home.

Illah Nourbaksh and his team at the Robotics Institute work with Quantum team to add a unique element to the production. It depends upon surprise… but we will reveal that robotics technology will allow the audience to affect the production, and we invite each viewer’s participation in a way that’s fun.

Quantum hopes you’ll attend one of two Point Breeze Nights! Quantum loves the residents of Bill Peduto’s Point Breeze district for tolerating their presence in such a beautiful, well-used park. On two evenings, July 31 and August 19, Bill hosts a pre-show party at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts followed by a performance of the play.
